CBS network executives sure had a series of complex relationships with their own desires to put left-wing radical garbage on the air. Or a just barely majority of them wanted to do it and the nearly-as-large minority was way, way more sensible.

Now as to the ultimate reason for why Mash and programs like made it to the air. It was most likely the CBS News hosted by Walter Kronkite. He often covered the Vietnam War events on his news time. ( How much mention of Ho Chi Minh ever being a mass-murderer in the 1950s ( see my postings) was ever made in the Vietnam War news images CBS showed is a great question!)The popularity of his news got Mash the green light to get on the air.
