It appears somebody has entered the episodes on the new reboot series on DiscoveryPlus as a new season on the cancelled A&E series.
Brief history: After the split-up of original leads Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson on the original Ghost Hunters back in 2016 - both leads start up new shows in 2019. Jason Hawes starts up a new show 'Ghost Nation' while Grant Wilson uses the 'Ghost Hunters' name for a new series on A&E. TMDB correctly has the new series as a different series than the original. Both series run for 2 seasons before ending (sidenote: Both should possibly be set to Ended on here).
Which brings us up to today:
On Halloween - DiscoveryPlus released the first episode of the new Ghost Hunters as a sneak preview of the upcoming season. Jason Hawes takes his team from 'Ghost Nation' and is now going to be the lead of the new Ghost Hunters series. What was interesting is that they called it 'S14E01' - a jump of 3 seasons from the season 11 of the original series. The press release, however, referred to the new series as a reboot. Until the season resumed with weekly episodes (starting today January 1) - there wasn't much more to go on until more episodes started arriving. Today's episode, for example has it labeled as S14E02.
To summarize the various conflicting information:
The original press release as well as a later press release both refer to this series as a reboot. This, of course, has prompted Futon to treat this as a new series. The second press release also lists out all the remaining episode names/descriptions/release dates ... however without actually naming a season designation.
Of most interest is that DiscoveryPlus itself is treating it as both a new series and a continuation. The have the new series set up as 'Ghost Hunters - Taps Returns' in the graphic for the page. They have it set up as a different series than other Ghost Hunters seasons for which they have lumped together under a separate show page of 'Ghost Hunters Classic'.
Even though the new series has only a single season on its show page - they've numbered it as Season 14. They've arrived at Season 14 because they have taken the 2 reboot seasons of Grant Wilson's shows on A&E (this show page) and now lumped those into the Ghost Hunters Classic page as seasons 12 & 13, revising old numbering that kept then separate even when the Grant reboot was cancelled with the news that no season 3 was coming.
My understanding of policy (as well as what appears to be the most plausible and common-sense interpretation) is that the new series is exactly that ... a new series that should be treated as such with a season numbering of '1'. However somebody just visiting the DiscoveryPlus show page itself is certainly going to be able to produce screenshots of numbering that matches the argument of a continuation - however that will also mean revisionism of previous seasons (specifically the Grant seasons on the A&E series). This appears to what has happened and how it is handled on another TeleVisionDataBase site with all seasons lumped together (incorrectly, in my opinion) under one banner.
Regardless - if the new show is added, it may certainly warrant a note of some kind that DiscoveryPlus show page shouldn't be the last place one looks before deciding on numbering. :-)
