Discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I first caught some eps on TV in 1998, and thought what a clever show - the dialogue and the atmosphere was very unique compared to... anything I saw up to that point - but i never decided to seek the show out.

Then in 2008 I watched Firefly, and I was hooked on that one - and it became my #1 TV-show ever. After watching it (and immediately after that, Serenity of course) I remembered that Buffy was also created by Joss... and I saw some episodes from that already and it was indeed good. So I got all 7 seasons and binge-watched it in 2009. After that, in 2014-15 I rewatched Buffy with my gf, but that time in parallel we watched Angel too. And I was just dumbfounded about that stupid decision to cancel it - I think S5 of Angel was the best... but I digress.

So when and why did you first watch Buffy?

I started watching the show early 1998 when it was broadcast for the first time in my country. It was on a relatively new network that showed a lot of new American tv shows and it was promoted everywhere as a must-see show for teens. I was also kind of into the hype of horror and all things supernatural back then and it seemed like an interesting show to me. I was hooked from the very first episode. B-movie horror and clever humour, what more could a teenage girl like me want!

I started watching it from the beginning when it first premiered on the WB. I was probably a little young (I was around 9), but I loved the concept.

I started watching when "I Only Have Eyes for You" from season 2 originally aired. Once the second season was over, I caught up on all of the the prior episodes - thanks to a friend who had recorded them all - before season 3 began.

I remember it well!

I'd seen the movie, and I'd heard that it was going to be a TV show and wanted to watch it, and then one Saturday afternoon I was just clicking through the channels and there it was, Buffy. I have no idea why it was on Saturday afternoon, I'm guessing that the local UHF affiliate had shown a basketball game on the original airdate (back when local stations would show basketball games, how things have changed). It was "The Witch," and I was hooked. After that, I never looked back. I found out when it aired and watched it every week.

So, whenever the Saturday after the original airdate for "The Witch" was, that's when I discovered Buffy. It was a good day.

I remember some of the earlier stuff on TV when I was pretty young, like maybe 10-12? They were reruns because I was only 3 or 4 when it originally aired. I watched the entire series when I was about 15. I've done a few rewatches of Buffy and Angel since then. It's fun because while rewatching, you pick up on a lot of stuff that you might've missed during the initial watch (or even during rewatches). I feel like I learn something new or see it from another perspective every time I watch grin

In Charmed!!! When I heard Phoebe say "Where is Buffy when you need her?"

Phoebe: I hate cemetery's at day. (Some noise) What was that?
Prue: Ah, probably a zombie or vampire.
Phoebe: Great, where's Buffy when you need her?

And I once saw a Buffy book in the library, and I read it.

You just blew my mind. Charmed was another show that I watched (while airing though - at least the last few seasons.), and I never knew about that reference. I've been kind of iffy about doing a Charmed rewatch but I'd definitely like to see that scene! Can you tell me which episode it's in?

hahaha, I love it so much!! It always aired for me at dinnertime, so I could only see the beginning, and the ending weary But I've re-watched the whole series now I think, I wanna do a second rewatch sometime hahah!

I think the Buffy episode was in S01E20 The Power of Two!

I'd seen a clip of the movie (Paul Reuben's death scene) and disliked it intensely. That and the title put me off...I thought the series would be a comedy about air-headed Valley Girls whining about how those awful vampires wouldn't let them get their nails done - but watered down for TV. Would probably have some animatronic cat giving out snark and pearls of wisdom like one of the other shows on at the time. Blech. Avoided. In Xander-speak, "Could you possibly imagine how excited I'm not?"

By the time the fifth season was on the air, I was with a BB for a scale modeling company, with a bunch of almost all guys in their 40s and 50s, and I couldn't fathom why they were all raving about Buffy the Vampire Slayer week after week. TBS or one of the other cable channels landed the rights to the series and began playing it two episodes a day, five days a week, from the beginning. So I gave it a shot.

First impression: 'hey this is pretty funny'. The characters were well-drawn and engaging, much of the humor was more intelligent than I's expected. Overall, fluff but highly enjoyable. I figured the humor would wear thin after a couple of seasons or less but I'd stick around until then. Every now and then the show would take a left turn and become poignant.

It wasn't until the Season 1 finale, Prophecy Girl, that I discovered that these characters had become important to me. I was invested in them emotionally. The DVD sets were only just hitting the market, and I grabbed each one as soon as they hit the shelves.

I'm from Turkey. Our only channel that showed foreign TV shows was airing School Hard (one of the series' best), I tuned in when Sheila was revealed to be sired. I thought it was such a cool show. I changed the channel after that. Nearly 10 years later I decided to watch the show from beginning.

I only started viewing about 4 years ago and just finished the show the other day. this now one my best shows and will defo rewatch. still have the last 3 seasons of angel to watch to.

1998, nothing on television so we thought we would give it a try. My husband and I were hooked right away. Steadfast Buffy fans and I moved right on over to Angel when the time came.

It was quite a topic of conversation with my neighbors son (once he was old enough to start watching it). He is 27 now and we still talk about it - I tease my kids that he was my friend first. He actually wrote his college essay on it.

My daughter has finally started to watch (she had only seen Once More with Feeling) - she wont let me talk about it though - she is afraid I will spoil it for her.

Lol, believe it or not, when I was 8 in 2002, so I was far too young to be watching it really, but I enjoyed it. I mostly wasn't allowed to watch it though, but I watched the final series during its British run, and I watched the first series when it was repeated in 2005, and then in 2015, I decided to look it up again (also, had to watch Hush in school when I was 16 or 17), and I realised it really was worth all the hype it gets! :) <3

How fun!!

I just started watching over a month ago when I found it on Netflix. I avoided it due to the title when on first run but watching it now, I'm hooked.
