Item: Earshot (3x18)
Language: en-US
Type of Problem: Incorrect_content
Extra Details: The air dates for season 3 episodes 18-22 of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" are wrong, and the fields are locked, preventing me from providing updates.
It looks like the episodes were added originally with "Earshot" being listed at the end of the season (because of a delay in broadcast due to real-life a school shooting), but later the episode titles and descriptions were corrected to reflect the original order. Unfortunately, the air dates weren't updated as part of that.
Correct air dates are:
S03E18 (Earshot): 9/28/1999 S03E19 (Choices): 5/4/1999 S03E20 (The Prom): 5/11/1999 S03E21 (Graduation Day: Part 1): 5/18/1999 S03E22 (Graduation Day: Part 2): 7/13/1999

Someone vandalized the episodes about a week ago it seems. I've restored them to their previous state.

Thanks. This corrects the air dates, but the episode ordering no longer matches IMDb, and may cause problems for people who had the IMDb order for their file names. Checking my DVD box set, it also has the ordering matching IMDb where S0318 is "Earshot", and the remainder of the episodes in the season are shifted over one (ending with Graduation Day: Part 2). I suspect that's what the previous edits you mentioned may have been attempting to correct.
If TMDB has a requirement to preserve air date order, the current numbering is technically correct, but I think this may lead to some confusion given the conflicting ordering elsewhere.

The main episodes list should always be in the original airing order.

Can you expand on this? If this is the case, why are there sorting options on Season pages for Episode Number and Air Date? By that logic wouldn't they always be the same? Not trying to be combative, I'm just not sure why the functionality exists unless there's a use case for it (which maybe I'm just not thinking of at the moment).

Because this option was there before the rule has been defined and has not yet been removed.
The rule is here. I quote : "Episodes should be added exactly as they first aired on the original network (title, date, order, season)."
They should be the same.
There is a use case, but it is very limited : When you create a series, it help to verify if the episodes list is in the correct order.
