But I don't know what to expect. I like a lot of sci-fi shows, such as Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Stargate. Hell, Firefly is good aswell.
Is this show similar to those, or is it it's own thing?
If so, can you describe it?

The Expanse is excellent, but it is not like any of the shows you listed. The first season is "slow" because there is a lot of setup. The second season is spectacular so far. SOOOO GOOD.
Little action. High tension. Politics. Rivalries. Mystery. The brink of war.

It takes place mostly with the inner planets of Mars and Earth. The Earth is starting to lose some of its resources. The Moon and Mars have been colonized, but Mars hasn't been terraformed. The Belter's do most of the grunt work out on Dwarf Planet Ceres. Mars and Earth are always colliding over everything under the sun, with Ceres pretty much caught in the middle with little to show for it. Something happens out in deep space around Dwarf Planet Eros that will put Mars and Earth more near Nuclear War. A lot of people compare it most to Battlestar Galactica. To me it's more a dark mixture of Battlestar, Stargate Universe, Firefly, and Dark Matter. Can't say that I find it that similar to anything I've really seen though. I love it myself and can't wait to watch it every week. Hardest part is pacing myself.

From the comments you guys have been writing, it feels like it's not that far into the future. Maybe the Sci-fi is similar to Alien in that it's very grounded in reality? It actually sounds fascinating. But I don't understand, are people radically different on Mars than Earth?

I think it's supposed to be like 200 years into the future. People from Mars, at least most that are shown, are more militarized. It's shown from mostly the perspective of Mar's military, with a few cool exceptions. I think Aliens is actually a pretty fair comparison in terms of atmosphere. This is more a case of have and have not. Not everyone is operating with the same tech or rules. I'd start with the season 1 trailer, then watch the season 2 trailer. Don't think it'll give away much in terms of spoilers, but it'll give you a better idea what to expect within the first 2 seasons. Keep in mind the first season is definitely a slow burn because a lot has to be setup.

Watched the first episode. It was OK, but I definitely need to watch more of them. 1 episode isn't enough to fully get a grasp of the world. Is it on Netflix? If not, is there any other streaming service?

If you can endure the really slow start, I definitely recommend watching it.

Well I don't have Netflix, so I'm not sure. I watch episodes sometimes on the SyFy App. You need certain carriers to watch TV Apps though. I have watched a few episodes on YouTube, but they are hard to find at times and don't stay up long after somebody posts them. I used to check YouTube first until I got the SyFy App. Hulu or Amazon Prime may have it also.

Yes season 1 is on Netflix and season 2 will probably be available after it ends.

MrRadical, what country are you in? Netflix USA does not offer The Expanse as streaming.

Looks like I was wrong, seems it's on Amazon Prime though.

Looks like the SyFy App only has episodes from this season, so you can't watch them there it looks like. I don't think Hulu has The Expanse either, at least it didn't last time I checked. I usually watch older episodes, that I can't find anywhere else, on Amazon Prime. Full episodes I believe cost $1.99 or $2.99 each. Seasons are obviously much higher. Way too expensive for entire seasons for me, but since The Expanse has shorter seasons, it probably wouldn't be as bad. I know I've seen Season 1 episodes on YouTube. Quality can be an issue, but they're there at times.

I've watched 7 episodes now. It's actually very engrossing. I like the realistic take of the future. Reminds me of Aliens and Firefly(except the FTL of course). It's maybe a little cliché at times and predictable, but it reminds me of Game of Thrones actually, especially the Holden character(he even looks like Jon Snow! Also his frown is funny).

Every one is there from the start and the politics is more interesting/worked through/plausible.
