Yeah, it is a strange time to set a new show in the Star Trek timeline. Presumably the hope is that it will last at least 4/5 seasons and then we're going to fall into gratuitous young Kirk, Spock, Bones cameo territory if not even before then...
Plus what timeline is this actually on? I'd read it was supposed to be pre the original TOS events, but it all looks rather Kelvin-verse / JJ Abrams aesthetically.
Ten years before Kirk, ten years before Spock... It fails right there, I'd rather watch reruns of Kirk and Spock than this!
The cast seem uninteresting and I don’t think the leads are charismatic enough to carry the show.
Ten years before Kirk as captain, and ten years before Spock WITH Kirk. But at that time, Spock should have already been in Starfleet and perhaps already serving with Captain Pike. Remember, the two parter The Menagerie was early in TOS season one, and Spock says that the events they see on the viewscreen happened THIRTEEN years prior.
What could also tend to ruin things for me, is if they show the Discovery as being more advanced than the Enterprise from TOS. They did something similar with the Enterprise series, where the ship was larger and more advanced than Spock said existed at the time in the episode "Balance of Terror."

It AINT going to look like 60's TV!
It IS set in prime Star Trek timeline (1966-2005).
It does look different. They have filmed out of America for this show. The first ever, for TV Trek; That would involved some decent money to do that I am sure. The sets look dark and quite dank, but this is only a glimse of the show, so I'll wait to pass proper judgment.
Frankly i feel that Star Trek Hit its prime between the TOS and TNG. Now it just feels like a sad hollow shell of its former self. And the Trailer doesn't really change my opinion. Also what the hell is up with the Klingons. They look awful.
Well sure, and either did Enterprise but at least they managed to make that ship itself, inc the interiors, look like an earlier design. The tech on the bridge here looks way out of place even comparing with Enterprise (not a 60's look).
They should have just put it on the Kelvin timeline to avoid the inevitable continuity complaints pouring in...
Since this occurs before the Narada went back in time and branched the main timeline into the Kelvin timeline this (like Enterprise, and a big chunk of First Contact) is canon to BOTH continuities.
For a 2 minute trailer I think it looks OK. Not sure about the look of the Klingons though.

But the Kelvin timeline branch occurs at Kirk's birth, so given this claims to be 10 years before Kirk / Spock's TOS adventures it would have to be on either one continuity or the other would it not?
Agreed re the Klingons. I wonder if they will give us the human looking Klingons as well, as per the Enterprise (was it?) explanation...
Set ten years before the original series but the universe and hardware looks more high tech! Sort of like George Lucas with his Star Wars prequels.
I'm not sure why they had to go back in time. Star Trek was a vision of the future - that's what Gene Roddenberry believed in, the potential of the future - so setting it in the past seems a little on the safe/unimaginative side.

ah yes - of course!
Well i guess it would have to be - That definitely would apply to both timelines!

Its still set over 200 years in the future so its not set in the past is it. I dont think setting the show over 300 years in the future is that great an idea as the technology and people would be so unlike what we could relate too...
I saw the trailer last night and it looked pretty cool. I've always thought that Michelle Yeoh is a good actress and I think she'll be a good Captain. The little bits of plot that were mentioned were very confusing. I'll probably watch the first few episodes and see what they're like.

The trailer is not promising. It looks like the result of too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak.

It doea look a little 'kiddie'. But the trailer is offering a snippet of footage, it is out of context.

Amazing to think Star Trek: The Next Generation is 30 years old. First episode was broadcast September 28, 1987.
Star Trek: Discovery is to be broadcast in the fall/autumn 2017. The Star Trek saga continues!
