Discuss Star Trek: Picard

https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/star-trek-picard-renewed-season-2-at-cbs-all-access-1203439601/

I remember when members of this board were claiming that this show would never even be filmed, as various angry young men on YouTube had "proof" that it was cancelled...

I hope you like being lectured by Sir Patrick about Brexit and Trump(again).I was optimistic about Picard but after the Variety article I am skeptical. And Picard has known more showrunners before it even aired than DISC(Picard is on it's third showrunner and DISC on it's fifth prior to season 3) Not signs that evoke confidence now does it?If It will get a second season all depends on how well season 1 does because the head honchos at the newly reformed VIACOM/CBS will watch the show very very closely and chanced are that if it fails to make the targets season 2 will not happened and they finally have legal reasons to sack Kurtzman and Secret Hideout.

I wholeheartedly agree with Patrick Stewart's views on Brexit and Trump, and on Boris Johnson. Pre-referendum I was undecided, but someone pointed out that you only had to look at the sort of people in power who wanted Brexit to see how it would work out for the average person.

The article I linked to was stating than S2 was already commissioned. I guess that it could still be cancelled, but S1 would have to be a HUGE financial failure. Not sure why you think they want to sack people, but if they do I'm pretty sure that they could "make it so" without having to hope that a season they've sunk money into doesn't perform as expected.

Hi Phillipe look let me get this out of the way I being European myself am not a fan of Brexit either nor am I a fan of Boris who to me looks like a mini-me version of Trump who is a moron.I have no love for either of them but that being said why would you deliberately want to estrange a big chunk of your audience by treating their views as not being relevant or talking them down? Other franchises over the past years have done so and look what happened to them most of them flopped(the recent Terminator and recent Star Wars movies should serve as an example)and the reaction of the general public to the Ricky Gervais speech at the Golden Globes were a tell tale sign of the general public being fed up..And that to me should serve as a signal to the producers of Picard that viewers in general have had enough with the political messaging and the agenda Hollywood has been trying to force upon us for the past four years. Also by what was said in the Variety article should serve as an indication that Picard will be dealing with the optimistic bright future that Roddenberry aspired to will not(like in DISC)be shown anymore which to me as a Trek fan are part of the foundations on which the franchise was build .Sure old Trek had a lot of political allusions as well but they weren't too obvious about it neither was it dismissive of other views as well. And both DISC and what it looks like it Picard suffer from the same problem that it is far too obvious with it's political messaging that it becomes like trying to lecture it's audience and being downright dismissive of other views than theirs.Old Trek while it tried to deal with social issues did not dismiss other views and it tried to find a common ground through discussion nowadays it seems like you either have to be for or against something and that is not what all inclusiveness is about all inclusiveness also means that it is relatetable not only to those who agree with you but also those who don't immediately agree with you.And from what I read Picard is making the same mistakes as DISC did by creating a Federation that is not about negotiations, diplomacy, exploration and finding a common ground but a Federation that is about conflict, fighting and trying to enforce it's values upon other cultures.Star Trek has become too dark, dystopian and violent for me and many other Trek fans that we feel like it is pissing all over the core values that Roddenberry founded it upon. The Way the Variety article snubs both TOS and TNG clearly indicates that Kurtzman and Secret Hideout still don't know what Star Trek is about but it certainly is not the glossy looking violent doom gloom dumbed down version he made out of it.And for those same reasons like DISC before it Picard will probably fail as well because people want a Star Trek that is optimistic intelligent bright a Star Trek that is able to build bridges between diverse types of people in stead of being divisive. And why he wil be sacked when season one fails to meet expectations is because a) viacom/CBS has halted all other Trek shows in development because it first wants to see how Picard is doing before investing any more money or rewarding Secret Hideout with more deals that binds Viacom/CBS for more years to that company. If that fails like DISC (and it was a failure because Netflix would have dropped it if it wasn't because of legal reasons,Netflix when it read the synopsis for Picard didn't want it because it was going to be in the same vein as DISC and they didn't wanted to invest any money in another show that viewers of Netflix didn't want to see add to that that Amazon wasn't interested in a Picard show that was too much like DISC either hence why they demanded rewrites and is why Viacom/CBS sidelined Kurtzman ). b)The head honchos at Viacom/CBS and miss Redstone in particular don't like the reboot Star Trek and anything the previous head of CBS Les Moonves has done to the franchise And they hate both what he and Bad Robot/Secret Hideout have done with it that they are actually itching to get rid of Secret Hideout and Kurtzman and Picard failing will give them ample reasons to sack him.

Like I previously discussed the rights issue which company owns which part of the IP is the root cause of all the problems. And since Paramount signed a ten year deal with Bad Robot in 2009 Paramount was legally obligated to stick with that deal until the summer of 2019(that contract has now expired). And it is highly unlikely that Viacom/CBS that now has all the Trek rights to extend that contract .A similar arrangement was struck by CBS under Les Moonves with Secret Hideout(subsidiary of Bad Robot) and Netflix that demanded a three season deal for DISC so Netflix is legally bounded to co-invest in DISC for three seasons breaking that deal would cost Netflix too much money and is part of the reason why DISC got a second and third season in the first place even though it is not the audience magnet it was expected to be.After season 3 the contract with Netflix ends and Amazon not being interested in DISC means VIACOM/CBS has to pay for the production all by themselves and it seems unlikely that after season 3 DISC will be extended because it costs too much.As for Picard it all depends on what kind of deal CBS struck with Secret Hideout for Picard but it seems logical to assume that there are certain circumstances that would allow Viacom/CBS to get out of the contract with Secret Hideout it under performing could be one otherwise Viacom/CBS might decide not to invest and make more Star Trek for the remainder of the contract.

Apologies for the very late reply; I've finally got enough time to post something without rushing.

I think that what Patrick Stewart says and what "Picard" is aren't necessarily the same. Like I said, if PS wants to use his fame to promote things he feels passionately about then he'll have to put up with (potentially) alienating the sort of people who can't distinguish between the actor and the part he plays. I personally find Clint Eastwood and Kurt Russell's political views abhorrent, but they've made some great movies.

As for "New Trek" (NT) being too politically obvious, it doesn't get much more obvious than "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield": https://static.tvmaze.com/uploads/images/large_landscape/78/195432.jpg . Not to mention the Cold War parallels with the Russians/Klingons. IMHO, NT is being no more politically aware than "Original Trek" (OT). In many ways, it's being less confrontational. Back in the day, a black woman on the bridge would've been much more shocking than a gay couple is these days. I think it's the "fans" who are making it feel more political than it is. Haven't you noticed that no-one complains about Bortus (sp?) being married to another male in The Orville, but Stamets and Culber in DIS are "PC nonsense" (or does it only count if they're human and/or not played for mainly laughs?).

As for the legal wrangles; time will tell. I wouldn't be surprised if there are behind the scenes shenanigans, but I'm not inclined to take the word of YT pundits, who were predicting that Picard would never make it to the screen, as gospel. Besides which, such battles have been fought on many shows. One of the first shows that I was aware of/informed about "behind the scenes" struggles was the 80s "Beauty and the Beast" where some of the writers (including George R R Martin) wanted more of the fantastical elements whilst others wanted a procedural with a hero who could Hulk Out and save the day.

Just read the user reviews at IMDB Invidia read about a 100-150 of them and then you will see how many of them don't like STP and you will see that those are in the majority.

As for the general public being fed up that their entertainment is filled with this NPC SJW woke content is pretty apparent when 90% of the movies released in the last couple of years that were openly claiming to promote any of these issues underperformed or tanked at the box offices like Ghostbusters 2016, The Last Jedi,Oceans 8,Terminator Dark Territory,Charlie's Angels,The Rise Of Skywalker,The new Dr. Who and Birds Of Prey. But hey to know about this one has to invest a certain interest in what is going on in Hollywood in general and behind the scenes.

Well, one reason not to complain about it, is that it's impossible. No species could be "all male." (And we find out that they're actually not, but still in a stupid way.)

But another reason people may not complain about it, is that their portrayal is far more leftist than "conservative" and if you complain about leftist claptrap you might find people camped out on your front yard, complaining/threatening your employer until you get fired, etc.

What I see people complaining about STD is not so much that it's PC nonsense (which it is) but that it's badly written, acted, produced...

Chabon stepped down as showrunner of STP after only four months that should indicate something is not right Invidia and if CBS was satisfied with his work as showrunner for STP shouldn't he be still in charge? That Chabon was going to do the Kavalier and Clay series was announced last year in November so he has been off Trek since November last year. And the rumors spoke of him stepping down was because he couldn't fix Kurtzman's mess other rumors talk about Chabon actually wanting to make STP more like older Trek but that would mean that characters and concepts were going to be incorporated in the story that demanded use of the IP that Viacom/CBS owned and didn't fall under the alternate liscense CBS and Secret Hideout agreed upon .As a result of this Secret Hideout would have to pay Viacom/CBS for use of their IP.When Kurtzman found out what Chabon was doing he was so furious (because making Trek the old fashioned way would mean Kurtzman had to admit defeat and the STD had failed not to mention it would cost Secret Hideout millions to use the Viacom/CBS IP)that he fired him.

Maybe you should read about the experience of writer and civil rights activist Walter Mosley when he tried to work as a writer for STD.

Pro Brexit: Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Jacob Rees Mogg, Tim Martin (Wetherspoons), Dominic Cummings, most of the Tory party.

Anti Brexit: Please let me know of anyone who is near the axis of evil listed above!

CORRECTION:

That would be the ANTI ABORTIONIST who are doing that ... who also STALK others … and WRITE DOWN the LICENSE PLATE NUMBERS of people who go to CLINICS ... and then COME to their HOMES to PROTEST and inform all of their NEIGHBORS about how they SUSPECT that they've had a PRIVATE MEDICAL PROCEDURE done (when that may also NOT even be the CASE at all).

And when that doesn't work for them, then THESE RIGHT WING CONSERVATIVE NUT JOBS (the ANTI ABORTIONIST who STALK others and INVADE the PRIVACY of other people) also resort to SHOOTING and KILLING DOCTORS as they're sitting in CHURCH, and/or to BOMBING CLINICS and KILLING other people who work there that way. And the entire time they're busy KILLING other people the 2 FACED HYPOCRITES also PRETEND to be a group who is against MURDERING people.

I can't really be surprised that you apparently only see a little of only what you want to see, but it's still sad.

P.S. Even the dictionary definition of "murder" is essentially the UNLAWFUL taking of INNOCENT life. Which is why, just for one example, capital punishment is not murder, but abortion is.

I think @Invidia has a point. Chabon may have seen the K&K offer as much more tempting than being a cog in the machine @ CBS. For all we know, if Showtime hadn't waved their wallet at him, he'd be happily beavering away at scripts for PIC S2.

Not sure what the point about WM is. He wanted to use a word that rarely gets used, was told "no" and walked. If you worked in a shop and were told that you couldn't greet black customers with a cheery "What up, n****!" would this be a problem?

No, because abortion is legal in most countries (https://reproductiverights.org/worldabortionlaws?category[294]=294) with varying caveats.

Anyway, it's 2333h hear in Blighty and I'm off to bed! Try not to get too wound up, everyone!

I've seen that episode many times, doesn't it matter to you that those scenes were depicting a 1950s environment (and it wasn't "the son of Sisko" in that setting), whereas they might have figured that nobody would use that word in the 23rd or 24th century? That seems like "progress" to me, at least.

Meanwhile, I still think it's hilarious that BBC edited an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" where Giles hot-wires HIS OWN CAR to escape from attacking vampires, because it "depicts criminal behavior."

So was slavery. And it still is, in parts of Africa.

What's your point?

Read the article Mosley didn't want to use the N word in the show. It was Mosley talking in the writers room about showing things that would make us feel uncomfortable being confronted with it.He gave an example from his own experience where a cop once stopped him and used the N word when he spoke of Mosley(Mosley is black). But some easily offended snowflake writers went to Human Resources and complained about the use of the N word when he was the N word the whole example was about HR told him he could not use that word otherwise they would fire him.Mosley wad so offended that he couldn't talk about these things openly and the backstabbing "colleagues" that he himself quit because he didn't want to be censored. That is the whole point it's to illustrate the writers don't even know what they are writing about and are so blinded by their own political correctness when a person who has been an actual victim of racism talks about his experience gets censored and the toxic environment these writers have to work in.
